The 2012 Formula Electric team recently registered as car number 18 in the Formula Hybrid SAE Collegiate Design Series. The competition takes place from April 30th to May 3rd of 2012. The team is currently in the process of finishing design on the 2012 vehicle as well as testing the 2011 vehicle.

A model of the 2012 Vehicle:

Testing 2011:

The 2012 design features a full carbon fibre chassis, a new drivetrain, battery box and a front and rear modular wings. The front carbon fibre chassis was autoclave cured and manufactured over the summer and is currently being sanded and bonded together. The rear couple months. A new drivetrain features fixed ratio gearbox and limited slip differential to increase reliability.

The drivetrain design:

Some new designs for the team include a rear mounted single batter pod and a full aero package including a diffuser and a modular front and rear wing.

The testing of the 2011 vehicle came with a few surprises. Due to the hight torque of the electric motors, the vehicles has broken a variety of different drivetrain components including carbon fibre drive shafts, the spindle and half shafts. These considerations have been added to the new design of the 2012 transmission.

The team would like to thank Boeing for donating carbon fibre and the for the use of their autoclaves. In addition the team would like to thank Forte Tool and Die for machining their uprights.
